HIV care must be individualized for each patient’s unique needs and symptoms. Treatment uses a combination of medicines to keep the infection under control, manage symptoms and prevent the infection from transitioning to full-blown AIDS. This “drug cocktail” is also called anti-retroviral therapy or ART (or sometimes highly-active anti-retroviral therapy or HAART). Most patients take at least three medications each day. Today, there are more HIV medications than ever before aimed at preventing the virus from replicating or slowing the growth of the virus, enabling doctors and patients to custom-tailor their therapy to address their specific symptoms and reduce the risk of side effects. During treatment, ongoing blood testing and exams help ensure dosing remains optimized to control the viral load (the amount of virus in the blood).
